Dry-Hydrants and Installation

In rural areas like the Stony Point community, where water mains and conventional fire hydrants are not accessible, installation of permanent dry hydrants can offer an alternative solution for firefighting operations. Dry hydrants are non-pressurized pipe systems that draft water from nearby ponds or streams.

A dry fire hydrant. It is a hard pipe with a connection on the visible portion that allows a fire truck to pump water from the lake. A strainer on the under water portion (not visible) prevents debris from entering. KeepOnTruckin, CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons.

One end of the pipe system is installed in the water source, and the other end is available near the roadside, where firefighters can connect to the hydrant and pump from the water source. The Virginia Dry Fire Hydrant grant program provides funding to cover the costs of installation and repair of dry hydrants to support firefighting operations

Pre-Incident Planning

In the fire service we like to be as prepared for incidents as possible. In a rural community like ours, no two houses or properties are ever the same. One way we can prepare for these circumstances is to perform a pre-incident plan. We we conduct one of these plans we look for certain items that may effect our response or operations. Some of the items we look for are size of the structure, occupancy type, any harmful chemicals or different types of energy systems. Even driveway conditions and length.
