Meet Lindsay Carlesi
Lindsay Carlesi wears several hats here at SPVFC – in addition to being the Thursday night crew leader, she’s also the Medical Officer for the brigade. As a University of Virginia student majoring in Bio/Medical Engineering, Lindsay decided she wanted to branch out beyond the UVa community. This led Lindsay to join SPVFC in her second year at UVa. What started as an opportunity get out of the “UVa bubble” while gaining experience as a care provider, has led to a longer-term commitment. Today, Lindsay is a UVa graduate who works as an engineer for Merck in Elkton. In 2019 Lindsay won the E-Cup (the University of Virginia Entrepreneurship Cup) at UVa – for an idea pitch on improving the ostomy process for patients.
Lindsay is deathly allergic to peanuts, which is especially interesting as Lindsay is a native of Suffolk, Virginia, the Peanut Capital of the World and home to an annual Peanut Festival. Without fail, this festival is held on Lindsay’s birthday, leading to her find alternate plans. Lindsay resides in the Charlottesville area with her two cats. She calls the station house and the brigade her “home away from home” and like many of us, she came here for experience, but finds herself drawn to the brigade’s family environment.
Thinking of volunteering?
Many University of Virginia students have gained valuable experience as EMTs and volunteer firefighters while going to college. The schedule of evenings and weekends works will for college students with busy class schedules. Quiet time in the station house with its internet access and work areas offers an opportunity to do school work in-between calls. Training and equipment are provided for free to all volunteers.
